Electrocardiogram (ECG) – a method of diagnosing the patient’s cardiovascular system, allowing to analyze his cardiac activity. ECG is performed by connecting a specialized device to the body – an electrocardiograph.
The main advantage of this diagnostic method is its high information content, speed and simplicity. The process of performing an ECG is safe, painless and has no age-related contraindications. And the low cost of an ECG makes it generally available to the population.
The results of the electrocardiogram allow:
- track changes in the myocardium, heart rhythm, and hypertrophy of the heart;
- identify the causes of unpleasant and painful sensations in the heart area;
- track the dynamics of diseases;
- to assess the effectiveness of the therapy;
- analyze heart contractions – their frequency and regularity;
- to record acute or chronic myocardial damage.
An ECG should be performed if one of the following symptoms occurs:
- the appearance of unpleasant and painful sensations in the heart area, of varying nature;
- increased blood pressure;
- increased heart rate;
- arrhythmia attack;
- the appearance of shortness of breath.
There are also a number of other risk factors that require an urgent electrocardiogram. These include:
- diseases of the ears, larynx, nasal passages;
- preparation for conception and during pregnancy;
- reaching the age of forty;
- excess cholesterol;
- regular long-term smoking;
- the occurrence of hypertension;
- planned surgical intervention of any nature;
- diseases affecting the nervous system, endocrine glands and internal organs.
It is advisable to undergo an ECG in private clinics that have modern equipment that allows for better “reading” of information from the patient. The advantage of non-state medical institutions is also the absence of queues, pre-registration and the ability to undergo an ECG daily at any convenient time. To do this, it is enough to have an identity document with you.
With the results of the electrocardiogram, you must contact a cardiologist for a detailed consultation or recommendations of both a preventive and therapeutic nature.
